ILSA STRUCTURE OF GOVERNANCE, revised 2023
ILSA will be governed by a Council of seven members, as chosen by a majority of voting members during regular elections, who will manage Association business, uphold the Association’s stated values, maintain ethical and responsible organizational and business practices, and endeavour to realize its Guiding Purpose:
a. President (1-year term), who will coordinate ILSA business and implement Council’s strategic plans and policies, serve as public voice for the Association on matters relevant to the guiding purpose, and pursue opportunities to expand the Association’s reach in both academic and non-academic settings;
b. President-Elect (1-year term: automatically becomes President upon completion of term), who will assist the President and other officers in successfully administering Association business and policies;
c. Past President (1-year term), who, based on their experience, will provide advice, judgement, organizational memory, and assistance to the President and other officers in planning and carrying out ILSA business and policies;
d. Secretary (2-year term, staggered with that of Treasurer and Outreach Coordinator), who will maintain accurate records of ILSA Council deliberations and Association business, including the recording of minutes during Council meetings and AGMs, assist the President in preparing for Council meetings, and coordinate general communications with the membership and other relevant parties
After the first election of ILSA Council members, the Secretary will stand for only one year in order to stagger the terms of Secretary and Treasurer.
e. Treasurer (2-year term, staggered with that of Secretary), who will oversee ILSA finances, make accurate and accessible reports to Council on a regular basis and to the membership as a whole on an annual basis; and
f. Student Representative (1-year term), who will be an advocate for student perspectives and concerns on Council and help to coordinate relevant activities, opportunities, and events for all student members of the Association.
g. Early Career Representative (2 positions, staggered 2-year terms), who, together, will advocate for the perspectives and concerns of junior scholars. They will coordinate relevant activities, workshops, opportunities, and events for all early career scholars who are members of the Association. These events will occur at the annual gathering and various points throughout the year, as determined by the Early Career Reps and Council.
After the first election of the second Early Career Representative, Council will identify one of those individuals to stand for only one year to stagger the two positions.
h. Outreach Coordinator (2-year term, staggered with Secretary), who will maintain and develop (where needed) the ILSA website and social media accounts. They will assist the President and Secretary in ensuring that information about ILSA’s gatherings is shared broadly. They will also work to engage the ILSA community throughout the year via social media, the website, and the ILSA newsletter.
